Garage Sales!

I slept in on Saturday after a fun but tiring week. The morning started off slow but, I was out the door at 9:00 am. Garage sales were waiting and I am a self proclaimed garage sale junky. I hit three of them in two glorious hours and wow what a great day!

The first thing that caught my eye was an old tool box, still in great condition. I opened the lid, only to find tools from the 30’s and 40’s - WOW!! There was a hand drill, a hammer, a set of 5 screwdrivers with beautiful thick wooden handles, a wood plane and a hand saw. They are amazing. I’m thinking of making an art piece with them.

The next stop was just down the road. It was an older couple that seemed to be down sizing their home. They had lots of furniture, some books, a stack of baskets, and a garden hose (it looked like it had a hole in it). In the middle of the yard was a lonely box waiting for me to investigate. I looked in and found a large clear bags full of crafty items. Yarn, beads, rolled up papers, buttons, ribbons, zippers and much more. I grabbed 3 bags at $1.00 a piece and moved on.

The next stop was an apartment complex where three roommates were going their own separate ways. A set of 5 turquoise garden pots were screaming for me to take them home. Got them all for $6.00.

What a fun weekend, I got all the supplies to do an art project, get a little crafty and do some planting. Well, I guess I know my plans are for next weekend.

Transforming a Bookshelf

I just moved into a new place! And of course I am doing my favorite thing - decorating. I just did a whirlwind trip to Ikea where I picked up a small dinette set and a bookcase that I am transforming into a mini baking pantry.

I have so many different flours, sugars and spices that my cupboards were overflowing. I am using the billy bookshelf from Ikea and I have lined the glass doors with some awesome fabric designed by Robert Kaufman. The print is called Melrose and the color I choose is green. It took me about 2 hours to get the doors lined and it was worth every minute it took. The new “Baking Pantry” looks like a designer piece of furniture and the print looks so cute with the retro style table and chairs. Next I am looking for fabric to redo the cushions on the chairs. Perhaps a faux suede.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Back to School Supplies

I love this time of year because I can stock up on so many basic supplies at reduced prices.

Tacky glues, glue sticks, markers (so many different kinds), construction paper and even regular office supplies. I was just at my large discount store with the big red target sign and I saw so many great deals on crafty supplies. I bought up a handful of permanent markers and some beautiful colored pencils. I also bought some fun “way to go” rubber-stamps for my sister – she is a school teacher. I think her students will really love to get a bright colored stamp on their papers. Now, I just need to re-organize my craft drawers.

Keep Crafty –
Cathie

DIY Rocks!

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to Tennessee where we got to meet all the fabulous people that make DIY Network so special. All the different hosts were on deck to help out on two holiday shows that you can catch beginning this Thanksgiving. It was so much fun to meet everyone in real life.

We flew out with Karl from DIY To The Rescue and had a nibble in the Dallas airport with him. Boy - Amy and Karl are two talents! Not only do they know their stuff when it comes construction and helping homeowners they are both so adorable and FUNNY!

Of course our first stop was catching up with all the crafty peeps – Michelle Beschen -you can see her new show this September. She was great fun and she is always full of creative ideas. Vickie Howell & Jen Perkins, they had the cutest jewelry and we talked shop about getting crafty. Vickie even taught tough Andrew Totolos from Tricked Out a few knit stitches. Keep and eye out the September… if you love crafts you will love Jen Perkins new show Craft Lab.

The gardening gang Jackie, Dean and Ahemd were so much fun. I got to work with Ahmed on a few projects – he is super smart and the newest member to the DIY family. I am not sure when his show starts….. must check on that.

We got to meet Amy and Paul from Bathroom Renovations and Kitchen Renovations. Amy was so adorable and Paul was super tall. We only got to see Amy for a day because she was whisked off to do the Today show! Paul had lunch with us and we shopped at a few souvenir shops together. We were staying near the Tennessee campus so I snatched up a few Tennessee trinkets for our crew back home.

We also toured the network facility (the main hub) and we got to meet everyone and see everything. The guy who composes the music for the commercials, the quality control fella, the editors, the graphics people and of course all the people who help out on our show.

After meeting everyone – I know why DIY Network is so special! It is the people.
