Hi Vickie!

GREAT IDEA!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your show! I learned how to knit from your show and great projects! I have made the socks, mittens, various shawls, and now I'm making a coat for my daughter!

Thank you so much for this wonderful skill! I will be joining you on the Knit-In and knit some cool squares for charity!

Thanks for this great opportunity!

This is a wonderful project! I look forward to participating! Are there any special colors wanted for the squares or is it up to our own choice?!

Hi, I am not very good with the computers so bear with me. I have just found the program Knitty Gritty on HGTV and I love it. I bought some knitting needles at an auction and a Magazine bookTricot was in with the lot. It had a beautiful picture of an Entrelac baby afghan Made in all white colors. It appears to be worked at right angles. Is there a way to get directions from you on how to do these stitches. Most of the directions were torn away and I am also not very good at knitting but I do try and I love to crochet baby afghans and have tried to knit one but chroched turned out better and I give them away to needy people with little ones. I hope you will be able to help me if not thank you for your time. Jean

Vickie,
Now that you've organized a Knit-In, how about a learning/teaching exchange of knitting information on board a cruise ship to Alaska?

Sounds like fun to me!

We need Knitty Gritty in Canada!!! Can you get onto the HGTV Canada channel???!

Posted by: Alison at January 29, 2007 9:45 AM

Hi Vickie, I will be participating in the knit in. I am going to plan a special evening by ordering dinner in so I do not have to cook, then get all my yarn in order and commence to knit.

I am currently working on a granny square afghan in memory of my mother who died August 4, 2006. She gave a lot of yarn before she died and the middle of each square is made of the yarn she gave me. I think I am going to continue that theme on Sunday and the squares I make on Sunday will contain some of her yarn so I am going to dedicate Sunday to my mom, since it will be the 6 month anniversary of her death.

Love your show.

What a super idea! I will definitely be there on February 4 for the Knit In, and I have already completed several squares to send to DIY for the blankets. Why didn't someone think of this before? I challenge all California knitaholics to step up to the plate for this Knit For Charity. Guess it took the fabulous, and uber likable stylologist, Vickie Howell to think of this. Knit On!

I think this is a wonderful idea!

What is the deadline for mailing in these squares?

Posted by: Debbie at January 29, 2007 10:53 PM

OK, I'm in. I'll be crocheting my squares. How many do we do? Is there a minimum or limit? Any special color??

Posted by: Johanna at January 30, 2007 12:25 AM

I have a unique way of knitting. My Italian Grandmother taught me to put the knitting needle under my right arm. It looks strange to everyone and I don't see anyone else knit this way. Have you ever seen anyone knit this way?

I'm a novice knitter, but hopefully I'll be able to join in and contribute!

I absolutely love the knitting videos on DIY (I just 'found' them today when DIY sent me a Crafts Newsletter.) Have you personally made a 'how to' knitting video or DVD? I'm such a visual person and would love to have a DVD (in addition to the DIY videos) to learn knitting. Or, is there a way to download the DIY videos to my iPod?

I love this idea of having a nation wide effort to make someone warm. I see it more than just keeping them warm is a way for them to feel hugged by so many of us who care for them and about them, even if we don't personaly know them.
I love your show, and what you do. Personaly I thank you because using your show as a center piece I have been able to get a closer relationship with my daughter 7, my God daughter 9, sisters and nieces. We have made knitting another common bond and reason to come together.

Thank You for making us warmer

Hi Vickie, What a great project you are undertaking.

I just recently started teaching a continental knitting class at our local library. I've asked my students to help knit mittens for our local group of head start children in need.

I am always happy to help the needy. Good luck on your project. I will be sending my blocks to you soon!

Take care...KNIT ON!!!

Hopefully this Knit-In will air on your sister channel HGTV.

Posted by: Barbara at January 31, 2007 12:14 PM

After we have made the square - do we mail them to Vickie? Or do we keep on knitting and make the entire blanket and donate it to a local charity? (I have done this before - 2 years ago I made 4 blankets for the local women's shelter)

Just wondering. LOVE the idea and I encourage you to do it more often and with more of the shows.

This is so great!! Can't wait to watch!!

Posted by: Sharon at January 31, 2007 3:29 PM

Hi Vicki,

I have been wondering if you could demonstrate the different styles of kniiting such as the continental style for me so that I can try to learn that way. I have been a thrower for over 30 yrs but have suffered an injury to my hand and can't knit as long as I used to. I noticed some of your guests knitting Continental and have heard you mention it before and was wondering if that would allow my to knit longer.

Thank you and please keep up the good work. You make knitting fund again and have helped to interest my girls (11 & 12) to start knitting as well.

Thank you for doing the shows with your teenagers on it. It's nice to see others promoting good quality after school activities for our children to do.

Hello Vickie! What a great way for us crafters to spend the SUPERBOWL! While a bunch of foolish men are out crunching and bruising, we are hard at it doing what WE love to do by keeping many others warm and dry just to survive! I don't need a coin toss here! I know what I want to do and where I will be doing it! Right here in Winona, Minnesota watching the DIY Network Knitty Gritty Knit-In! (You can find our group at www.lovesmanycloths.com)

See you on Sunday!

I have just discovered Knitty Gritty and just love the show. I called to see if I could get the DIY network so I could watch on Sun, but the cost is over $50 and just can't do it.

I have been knitting for over 60 years and would love to take part, but I am having trouble figuring out how it is going to work for the "live" segment and if I can even be part of this.

Learned new things after just a few shows, so will be knitting on Sun even if I have to do it alone.

Thanks for a GREAT show.

I think you have a great idea going! I thought there was going to be a few helpful hints, ie for worsted yarn, approx. the number of stitches needed to cast-on to get the right size. (I am a beginner.) Thanks for your help! Love your show!!!

Thank you for a great knitting program. I've been knitting for years and recently taught my grandaughter to knit and she absolutely loves your program. She's learned a lot. I've done squares for Charity for years and take them in to the local Michael's where they put them together. I will be watching your show on Super Bowl Sunday and knitting up squares like crazy--so will my grandaughter. THANKS!

Hi! It's Nan with DIY. I just wanted to let Becky know that DIY has a video showing how to knit in the Continental method. Go to http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/na_knitting/article/0,2025,DIY_14141_3721026,00.html and click on the second media link; the first video shows how to cast on, and it's followed by the video of the Continental technique. It doesn't show how to purl, but at least it may give you something to play around with. Hope this helps!

I am a victim of Hurricane Katrina and the stress from it made me take up knitting as a hobby. (I have learned how to crochet in July 2003 and knitting in November 2005.) While my family was recovering from this national disaster, we have been helped by numerous charities during our time of need. The DIY Network Super Sunday Knit-in will be an event that I will hugely participate in. My newfound hobby will add to the cycle of charity contributions. Thanks DIY Network, Warm Up America and Vickie Howell for organizing this event!

Hi Vicky,

You can bet your booties I'll be watchin' Sunday evenin'!

Love your show "Knitty Gritty"!! We built our home 'in the woods' in 2000 and purchased a satellite since there were no other options to receive your program in our area. Since that time, I've enjoyed watchin' each episode (even if some are reruns). You have great guests with fantastic designs and demos (I just love the midi-cam shots) for us dummies to watch. Bless your sweet heart for doin' a wonderful show for us beginner, intermediate and advanced knitters!

Can't wait 'til the "Knit In" marathon!!

Posted by: ~Buffalo Gal~ at February 2, 2007 7:20 PM

Someone asked about colors for the squares. I don't think the color or yarn you use for the squares is important, just that they get a lot of squares so that they can help as many people as possible.

What a great idea!

Posted by: Karen at February 2, 2007 7:25 PM

Someone asked about where to send squares - and also for some tips about how to knit certain stitches.
There's all kinds of info on the Knitty Gritty page - just go there and look around - you'll see videos you can watch and learn from...and the address to send the squares is on the pattern page here on diynetwork.com - but since you are knitting AND blogging (LOL) I'll put it here.

I hope she is able to get this. I just want to say I enjoy the show, and want to thank Vickie again, like so many of the girls are doing.

LOVE YOUR SHOW! I watch every weekday. I've been knitting, crocheting, embroidery,& other craft regimes since I was a teen. I put down the needles to work as a nurse but, unfortunately was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1985. I have been homebound & bedridden for many years on & off. I suffered a stroke 2 years ago which affected my right side, including my hand. Through prayer and faith in God & myself, I am recovering the use of my right hand & arm, due to knitting & crocheting, I have done better day by day. I knit socks for the charity, www.socksforsoldiers.com, which sends socks & goodies to our troops in Iraq & Afganistan. I have also sent capstothecapital.com, which sends knitted & crocheted hats for newborns in under developed countries, where babies usually don't make it due to small birth weights & loss of warmth. I will be knitting & crocheting squares for this knit in, though I'm not sure if my cable company will be airing it! HGTV is the channel, so if they would be so inclined I could watch. PS I have learned quite a lot from your show & will continue to watch. A devoted kntter, KNIT ON! THANKS!

Hi Vicki!!

I absoluletly love this idea! A night of knitting while the rest watch FOOTBALL(yuk!). I will be making squares for such a worthy project, while I'm doing my favorite Pastime, that I absolutley LOVE doing more than anything --KNITTING!!!
Your show is the BEST, I have learned so much from your show. I have learned to knit in the Round, how to knit SOCKS!(which I never thought I'd be able to), Sweaters, Fair Aisle, Intarsia and so much more. I never miss your show. I wish it was on more often than it is!! Thank-you, Vicki and all your Great Guests!!

Love your show. I can only catch it on the weekends, but it always has something I can incorporate as I teach myself to knit. A gift of 2 garbage bags of yarn started my knit quest. You had a guest from knittinghelp.com on the first show I saw. Her DVD is very helpful--and all the content is free on her site. Can't decide if I should flip the channel to the Knit In during the game or the commercials--alas , we only have one TV that can get DIY.

Posted by: Yolanda at February 4, 2007 9:44 AM

I knit when watching the Colts...part of the ritual. Even done baby blankets for a local hospital. Will participate today as I will be flipping back and forth to the game...only can watch offense.

Would love you to have a place we can go to get some of the tips your guests show that are not displayed in the patterns. Like the casting on with crochet hook and some others I have seen but it didn't repeat it enough for me to learn, or time passes and I can't remember all the details. This would be great to see a video of.

Thanks for teaching me how to do a cable stitch and feel comfortable.

Keep on knitting, and GO COLTS...Indy is behind you all the way.

Can't wait to get started!! HURRAY FOR KNITTING!!

Posted by: Carrie at February 4, 2007 10:51 AM

I learned how to knit and purl as a child. As an avid crocheter, I once again picked up knitting from watching your show.

My greatest frustration is that when I drop a stitch, I cannot figure out how to weave it back in place with a crochet hook.

I can decrease easy enough, but cannot figure out how to increase! I have checked out almost every knitting book at the library, but just keep giving up and going back to crochet.

Also, I would like to see you begin a project with the "tail" method of casting on.

Thanks for this opportunity for making this Super Bowl Sunday the absolute best anticipated one ever! I'm going to check out WUA in my area (Kansas City, MO) and if I can't find one, I'm wanting to start one!

VICKIE: THANKS SO MUCH! YOUR SHOW IS SO FUN!

Hi Vicki, This is for Sharon, who has trouble knitting because of a problem with her hand. I also swithced to contenential style but I have a modification on how to hold the yarn. If you go to Vicki's how to knit bit, it shows her wrapping the yarn aroun her index finger on the left hand a couple times, don't. I heard this from an older woman a long time ago. Let the knitting kneedle do the work of setting the guage, don't choke the yarn. Lay the yarn over your index finger and under the other three. Don't lift your finger but lay it along the left kneedle toward the tip. This position makes it very easy to shift the yarn front to back, and to pick the yarn with the right kneedle. For years I had trouble trying to learn to knit, I finally taught myself the english style. An injury to my hand/wrist was robbing me of needle arts. Finally I remembered what this very elderly lady with advanced arthritis had shown me. I just switched this month. Contenential is much easier on an injured hand/wrist. I relax my arms into my lap, on a pillow, or arm rests. There is very little movement required. It does take a little decided practice but I think it will help you. Knit on!

Thanks for the forum Vicki, I love your show even though HGTV is errouneously not showing it Superbowl Sunday. You were on as a teaser on HGTV. When I get a job I'm adding DIY to watch you!

Remember that just as important as making the squares is assembling them into the blankets. Our local Michael's has ended up turning the joining of warm up America squares into an ongoing project.

This is partly because very few show up to the joining, and also because joining them can be a little more time consuming than sitting and working on the squares.

Here in Brooklyn, New York, Knitty Gritty is broadcast only at 11:00AM, on Monday to Friday. Is it possible to put in an evening time slot, even if only once a week? I know a lot of us knitters who work during the day would appreciate it. Thanks, and keep up the good work

Love Knitty Gritty! Help. I'm never satisfied with the way I join seams in a garment. Can you give some mattress stitch tips or any other tricks for side and shoulder seams that look good?

I completed a scarf similar to The Scarf! by Candi Jensen on my Knifty Knitter Long, oval yellow loom. I skipped every other peg with Color A (teal) and then wrapped the skipped pegs with Color B (black). After doing several rows, I reversed my colors for a rows and this created an optical illusion. I then reversed my colors back to the original vertical design. It turned out beautifully! The black and teal are my nephews' favorite colors -- he is a HUGE Carolina Panthers fan.

Hi Vicki!

I have enjoyed your show! There is so much to learn. I began knitting again after many, many years. I have taken some classes at a local knit shop while also watching every episode of your show at least twice!

I have a question, could you explain the difference between the "quality" of yarns you can buy at local knit shops and the yarn purchased at local fabric and craft stores? In other words, what are the advantages/disadvantages of purchasing yarn from each place.

Happily knitting in Southeast Michigan!

Lucy-- Any colors are cool. Scrap yarn works great!

Terry--I do enjoy a cruise. If you change it to Ireland, then you've got a deal! ;-)

Wendy-- No DVD's yet, but I'm working on convincing the network that there's a demand. :-)

Cheryl-- New epsiodes are coming soon on DIY, I promise. Right now though, there are some on HGTV.

Thanks everyone, for your kind words! xo, Vic

Hi Vickie,
I watch your show every day. I didn't know there were so many different ways to cast on. I have learned a lot just by watching. I am left handed. Will you have any left handed knitters on the show this year? You are so young, how did you get started on "knitty Gritty"? Keep up the good work.

Vickie how do I get my kit for the knit in? I also need to know how squares and what colors. I watch your show as often as I can. I drive truck so I'm not home that often, but when I am and your show is on that is where I am. I taught myself to knit after I married my first husband. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was in junior high school.

Hey Vickie,
I love the Super Sunday Knit In :). Can't think of a better way to spend a cold foggy sunday in Western Washington. Please keep the cool knitty books coming.

Hi Everyone -

This is Karen from the programming dept. at DIY Network. Someone asked why the Knit In Marathon isn't on HGTV. HGTV is running Knitty Gritty during the weekdays - but they aren't running the Knit In Marathon. The Marathon is exclusive to DIY. If you don't have DIY in your area, please call your cable or satellite operator and request it. In the meantime, you can keep participating in the live blog - and even view some cool Knitty Gritty clips.

Thanks and KNIT ON!

HI, What size blocks do you want? What type of yarn? Any special colors? I'd like to know what yarn to dig up from my stash for this project. Thanks, Cathy

Shipping Address (for knit and crochet squares):
Warm Up America! Foundation
Department DIY Network
2500 Lowell Rd.

Wish I could be watching, but I am knitting.

I make Socks For Soldiers (a Yahoo group) and have been using the tiny needles and black yarn till I can't see straight, so this (making squares)is a great way to relax. We can knit socks, either black for under their boots, or leisure socks to just make them happy and warm - mostly just so they know someone back home is thinking about them. They are stuffed with small needed items and sent out to the soldiers that don't get mail from home or on a request basis. We have sent a lot of socks, but still need a lot more.

Back to socks - I feel quilty not working in the round, but I'll get over it. Have to take a day off every now and then - right? Sure wish I could see the shows today, but I can't. Love watching all the fun things when I can watch it on HGTV so will just have to wait for tomorrow.

I am having a problem with gauge. I am using worsted weight acrylic and have moved down to size 5 needles and still my swatch is coming out 9 inches long. What can I do to correct this?

I am still having fun, anyway

Hi Vicki,

My name is Sheryn and I'm a knitaholic! I love you show and I love to knit. I have begun a Prayer Shawl ministry at my church and it has taken on a life of its own. I'm so happy to see other happy knitters.

I've gotten so many great ideas from your show. I have one request. Many of your demonstrators use the European style of knitting and when they do a complicated or new stitch, it is sometimes difficult for me as an "American" knitter to figure out how to do it using my style of knitting. Can you demonstrate the stitch in both versions?

Keep up the great job. I'll keep watching! I watch on both DIY and HGTV. And, since the Patriots are playing this year, I will definitely be watching Knitty Gritty!

Can someone point me to where I log in to join the Live Blog?

I'm disappointed the Knit In is not on HGTV. I don't get DIY. I get Knitty Gritty on HGTV. I love your show, and wish it was on more often. I never miss it.

Wow!! Lily Chin is amazing but she goes so fast that I can't keep up. It also would help if when the camera shows the knitting it was from the knitters perspective. I'm constantly trying to flip it around in my mind. Lily Chin is coming to the DFW Fiberfest 2007 in Addison TX The weekend of April 13 - 15. But I feel I will not be up to the challenge and will probably take some other classes. I look forward to meeting her though!! Hey Vicki maybe you could be a presenter in the future!!! I love your show and watch as often as possible

Okay, I must be lost. I don't see where Vickie is blogging live. What link do I go to?

Posted by: Michelle at February 4, 2007 7:13 PM

Hey Vickie!
WOW! Love the shows! I hope all of my Love's Many Cloths gals are watching the shows today! We received some sad news yesterday morning that one of our Love's Gals had a heart attack during the night and is now fighting for her life...She is an avid crafter and one of the List Moms for my Love's group. I am dedicating one of my Knit In squares to GINGER BROWN from North Carolina! Many prayers are going out to her and her family!

OH, by the way, it is 40 below zero with the windchill in Winona, MN today...the best thing to do on a very, very brisk day is to sit and knit!

My DVR is set on tape and I will be watching the Knitty Gritty show whenever I want to...how is 24/7???
Thanks DIY Network!

HI, Any chance your knitting shows will be available for purchase on DVD format? I don't have DIY here, only HGTV. I did find directions so I can participate with the knit blocks. Cathy
