DIY's Super Sunday Knit-In
Hi! This is Nan, from the DIY Network. Just thought I'd let everyone know that we're already receiving lots of great comments, so I'm going to start publishing them in anticipation of our big event. Vickie Howell is currently on the West Coast on a book-signing tour, and she'll be joining us on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET for her live blog. I'll be watching, knitting and blogging right along with her and all of you. We're going to have a great time!

I was lucky to meet Vickie at Barnes and Noble last week. Such a hoot! She is just like on Knitty Gritty! We had such a great time just talking and sharing stuff. I took a few pictures and got my book signed by her. I am really looking forward to Sunday and have all my "stash" by the chair and have given word to all members of the household that 5 to 11 PM is MINE! Thank goodness, we have two TV's.
Happy knitting and crocheting to all.
Dorothy from Seal Beach.

Hi! I'm very excited about the Knit-In tomorrow. I learned to knit so that the blanket I am making out of boucle for my husband wont have holes for his toes to stick out of like crocheting leaves. I love Red Heart Light and Lofty boucle yarn. It instantly warms the skin on contact and is extremely soft. During the Knit-In I am going to make the 7" x 9" sections for the charity. I'll use the boucle. Can't wait!

If you think My men will be letting me anywhere near the TV remote on SuperBowl weekend, you are crazy. How about putting info here as to the purpose of the "Squares", the size, where to send them, etc. So those of us who live in Football Mania homes, can participate too. Fran

Hi! What a SUPER idea, help others with our knitting and crocheting! I'm glad to take part in a good thing. I'm working on my first sweater now, and I would really like to learn to crochet, especially, the little flowers in the Knit Simple, Sring 06 issue. I'd like to see someone on the show work on some flowers. Thanks, Kim

I'll be knitting in Maryland along with all of the knitsters! I'll take a break from knitting for my grandson (expected in early May!) to knit for Frederick Memorial Hospital's newborn unit! Knit on fellow knitsters!

Hi! This is Carrie from Englewood, Ohio. I am soooooooo excited about this project! I will be knitting all day! Can't wait to get started!!!
Posted by: Carrie at February 4, 2007 10:50 AM
I found an afgan that had been started in 1972. The directions are in the box but I can't quite follow. I haven't knitted in years. It's a scalloped afgan and 1, 2 & 4 of the 4 rows are a basic knit/purl. No problem there....but the 3rd row is the scallop and I can't follow the "yarn over" and knit 2 together, etc. and still come up with the 300 stitches I started with. I keep ending up with less. Can you help me with this? I'd love to finish this long ago project! Thanks!
Posted by: Lynne at February 4, 2007 12:18 PM
I love this idea...it's so inclusive, and lets knitters of every level participate!Your show is so wonderful for widening the scope of knitting for many of us...making us think outside the box, or the usual projects! Knit on!!

oooh this is cool! It will be a blast! Since my favorite team isn't going to the big game this year a Knitty Gritty marathon is perfect!

I am looking forward to participating in the Super Sunday Knit In. Where do I send my squares when completed?
Posted by: Carol Ruehle at February 4, 2007 1:35 PM
Need more 7" x 9" Warm Up America Patters that include illusion knitting, and more advanced knitting and crochet techniques because I am having too much trouble with gauge on these advanced techniques and it will take me too long to figure them out - when I have a quick pattern of each technique with 7" x 9" instructions.
It also makes me feel more ready to try bigger projects.
I am a knitting meetup organizer www.knitting.meetup.com/949 and a member of The Crochet Guild of America and The Knitting Guild Association.
So any time there is a chance to whip up a new technique swatch that I can give to charity is a must with me.

Hi,
I want to make the illusion scarf shown on Knitty Gritty. The Pronto yarn is no longer available. Can you suggest a good substitute? I want the illusion to turn out well.
I love Knitty Gritty and am learning a lot from the show! Thanks!

I do not subscribe to DIY Network, but, do see Knitty Gritty on HGTV. Is there any way I can purchase a copy of the Knitty Gritty Marathon? There is so much information on the Knitty Gritty show, and I just love it. Thanks so much, from Omaha, NE

Hi there,
Looking forward to this. I will be watching the game, though, so I started knitting squares this past Tuesday and will be darning in ends during the game and checking out the live-blogging, too. Fun!
Posted by: Tamara at February 4, 2007 3:21 PM
HGTV which shares some shows like the block of scrapbooking, knitty gritty etc is not doing the KNIT IN, I don't receive DIY and am totally bummed. Us knitsters need alternative to that Bowl game.
thanks anyway and good luck.

I recently taught myself how to crochet after having neck surgery (due to being a runner most of my life) I wish I would have discovered this years ago. With my ADD personality it has always been very hard for me to relax-crocheting has solved that dilemna. The first night I stayed up all night...I COULD NOT STOP... I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE THIS SUPER SUNDAY KNIT IN... THERE IS NOW A PURPOSE TO JUST KEEP ON CROCHETING!!!!!!!!

I'm ready to start knitting. Are the requirements available? What size, yarn, etc?
Posted by: Debbie at February 4, 2007 4:51 PM
I am not sure how all this works
Posted by: Evelyn at February 4, 2007 4:53 PM
Just wanted to say that I think this is a GREAT idea to have something special for us knitters to enjoy today while "that football game" is going on.
I look forward to settling in with my needles and yarn, and enjoy "Knitty Gritty" for the entire afternoon and evening!
Thanks!!!

I am a semi beginner knitter i was wondering if there were any tips on how to get the cast on and bind off to be the same consistency. With me one is usually looser then the other.
Posted by: Suzie at February 4, 2007 5:11 PM
I love the episode where you do the hidden pattern in the scarf. I wanted to make my own like you did, How did you make your own patter or is there a pattern for the letters?
Posted by: Suzie at February 4, 2007 5:14 PM
Laurel here from NC, checking in! Love the Knitty Gritty Show soooo much! And this Knit-In is such a great idea! I have started my first square. Vickie, tell us about your new yarn line-- what types of yarn are included?
Posted by: Laurel at February 4, 2007 5:16 PM
Love, love, love your show! You inspired me to learn how to knit and I'm off and running with it. Thanks for having such a cool show. Now if we could just get a show about crochet...
Posted by: Mary at February 4, 2007 5:20 PM
Hope I'm doing this correctly - duh... anyhow, I discovered the show just recently, and absolutely love it. I've only been knitting for a couple, three or so years now, learned at a Knit Out in Philly, but have already picked up so much from your show in just a week of watching. This is a terrific idea - hubby is watching the football thingee upstairs in the bedroom, and I've got the 'puter and tv downstairs to myself for this. Got 2 squares done, working on a third. Great idea. Valerie

I love to work on my computer and to knit. is there any software you can recommend that will make patterns for me with images ive found online?
Posted by: Suzie at February 4, 2007 5:21 PM
sometimes when i am knitting using a pattern i can't finish a row or sometimes i cant tell what row i am suppose to be on. Are there any tips for remembering where you are in your pattern?
Posted by: Suzie at February 4, 2007 5:26 PM
How do i keep myself from becoming frustrated with not having my knitting perfect or becoming bored with my knitting and starting 20983 different projects?
Posted by: Suzie at February 4, 2007 5:34 PM
Great show! Keep up the inspirational ideas! Looking forward to the marathon evening.

I'm also very disappointed that your Knit-In isn't being shown on HGTV - I was looking forward to it VERY much! I've noticed that some other followers have expressed the same disappointment, so I'm happy that I'm not alone! As you always say - "Knit on!"

I live in Wash., DC. I have been scrolling the channels and can't find you. Where are you? What channel? What time? I feel like I'm missing a lot thus far and would like to join. I set aside the evening to do so. Thanks.

Warm Up America is one of my favorite charities. I have emailed your DIY "Knit-in" page to the following loom knitting groups that I belong to and have asked them to participate with me.

Also, I completed a scarf similar to The Scarf! by Candi Jensen on my Knifty Knitter Long, oval yellow loom. I skipped every other peg with Color A (teal) and then wrapped the skipped pegs with Color B (black). After doing several rows, I reversed my colors for about 6 rows and this created an optical illusion. I then reversed my colors back to the original vertical design. It turned out beautifully! The black and teal are my nephews' favorite colors -- he is a HUGE Carolina Panthers fan.
ROCK ON VICKIE !!!!!!!!

Vicki:
Thank you for showing kids on your show. It has inspired me to teach my 8 year old grandaughter and she LOVES IT. She is just starting but she is committed.
Love to knit, do a lot for charities. Saw your show on knits looking good on both sides, will knit a square like that.
Thank you for your show. You are a delight!

Hi, I have been knitting for a long time, but I still consider my skills very beginner-level. Since I started watching Knitty Gritty, I have picked up so many ideas and techniques, I can really feel my skills improving!
By the way, on the show, Vickie keeps talking about a free knit kit when you log on to the DIY network web site, but I have looked around and I don't see a link anywhere to the free knit kit. Can someone send me the link? Does this link include a download of some kind? It would be really great to get a downloadable booklet of all the designs and patterns shown during the knit-in Knitty Gritty marathon.
I am watching the mittens episode and am now inspired to make mittens! I never had the guts to work with double-pointed needles before, but I feel the fear subsiding. :)
Thank you,
Vicki (not Howell, & not spelled with an e! lol)

Hey yall from Texas--
I have what is probably a ditzy question but here goes...
I bought a book of patterns that had a knit purl pattern but on subsequent rows, the author wrote "work the stitches as they lie". I'm assuming that what they mean is knit the knits & purl the purls?

Hi Vickie,
Would love to see your Knit Picks in writing, some are so good but I seem to forget them when I need them. LOL Ginger

What is the best way to send our completed squares for the Warm Up America ?
Would they be ok to just send in a manila
envelope?
Thanks

Hello everyone from Lafayette, LA
I am knitting squares & watching the game, too.
The yarn I am using is donated from someone who wants to participate in this WONDERFUL Knit-In for - Warm Up America, but does not know how to knit or crochet. We love the idea and are glad to participate.
Posted by: Leslye Chapman at February 4, 2007 7:33 PM
our group that meets at ACMOORE knitted and crocheted lots of squares recently - the store donated the yarn - ask your local store if the will help - our completed projects will go to a local battered women's shelter. Those women need all the extra warmth and hugs they can get.
Glad you are highlighting the need and the fact there are orgs out there we can help with our crafting.
How 'bout doing some premie hats on the show for charity?
I get lots of ideas and help from your show!

I love to knit and when I discovered your shows on DIY I was thrilled. I just found out about the show broadcast on HGTV by reading the blogs tonight. I have seen all of the shows on DIY several times and I hate that I've missed the new ones. I will set my DVR tonight to begin tapping them. The show is great and can't wait to see many more!!
I will be participating in the Warm Up America squares. I have already made many of the baby caps from your guest's patterns to donate to her charity. Thanks for the shows and keep them coming!!
