Fun With Felting
My first experience with felting was one that's fairly typical, from what people tell me. It involved my favorite wool sweater, an overworked mom and a load of laundry. (Do you see where I'm headed?) Mom was doing her umpteenth load of laundry for the day (how such a small family dirtied so many clothes was one of those mysteries we never quite solved), and the sweater accidentally got tossed in with the stuff that was being washed in hot water.
Could that be why I still, deep down inside, think you have to yell expletives at your projects to get them to felt properly? I guess it just imprinted on me in that blinding instant that swearing and felting sort of go hand in hand.
Actually, I'm exaggerating just a little bit. Luckily, Mom and I always had a good sense of humor about incidents like that, so after the initial shock we cracked up over the poor little doll-sized sweater that had gone from being soft and cuddly to having a texture roughly equivalent to that of a badly poured concrete driveway. I'm not kidding: that bad boy was hard as a rock!
In the years since that fiasco, though, I've learned that when properly felted, items won't be rock hard; instead, they can be soft and luxurious. That's why I've chosen for this week's project Beverly Galeskas' Fuzzy Bunny, an adorable concoction of wool and angora that would make a great Easter or spring gift for your favorite child. I think I'll start a bunny this weekend for one of the special children in my life (my friends have been busy doing the baby thing this past year). And maybe one for myself, while I'm at it....
