Road Trip!
Spring has finally arrived, and this girl's fancy has turned to thoughts of getting out of town and heading -- anywhere! There's just something about this time of year that makes me start longing for the open road.
I have this really great car that I love with an almost masculine devotion (I say "almost" because I finally stopped leaving the garage light on so the car wouldn't get scared at night). It's a hybrid, so it gets great gas mileage; it's incredibly cool looking, like a little spaceship; and it's an unbelievable man-magnet (even though I'm probably older than most of the men it attracts -- a gal never gets too old to appreciate the guys)! I keep a lot of necessities in it (some would say I actually live in my car and my condo's just a place I hang onto because, face it, cars don't have a lot of closet space). You know the kind of stuff: fast-food restaurant napkins, a toothbrush but no toothpaste, empty Altoids tins -- things that will undoubtedly come in handy at any time and could even save a life given the right circumstances (hey, I used to watch MacGyver -- I know how important it is never to throw anything away).
What I don't have in my car are the two things I've always secretly wanted but just never allowed myself to get: a pair of fuzzy dice and a matching steering wheel cover. Well, this weekend I plan to change that: I have some terrific leftover red fake-fur yarn that's just begging to be turned into something fabulous, and I just rediscovered two great patterns from one of last winter's Knitty Gritty episodes that tell how to make exactly those must-have accessories.
I think they'll look quite fetching in my black-with-gray-interior car. And in case of a disaster, their fire-engine-red color could probably be used as an emergency flare! So I really need to make them as soon as possible in anticipation of that road trip….
