Choosing a Digital Camera
One of the most common questions I hear is "Which camera should I buy?"
I agree, sometimes it's nice to just have someone say "buy that camera" and you're done, no time or money wasted. But that someone may not be aware of your specific concerns or needs and you may end up purchasing a camera you know nothing about with the added bonus of potential buyer's remorse.
Now where were we with that saving of time and money? That's why I've written a tutorial that will help simplify the process, with up-to-the-minute resources and information on the basics so you can make the right decision for YOU.

Erin,
Thanks so much for all of your knowledge! It's nice to know there is somewhere to turn when you have questions. Every question is always answered. Once again, thank you!

Erin,
I absolutely LOVE your show!!!! I have learned more from your first season than I did at my local community college in 2 years. I am so bummed that your show is only on once a week, what happened? It seems like last season was on like 4 or 5 days a week. If anybody at DIY is reading this, please put her on more frequently! Not all of us can afford Tivo!
On a side note, I was wondering if you ever make personal appearances? I noticed from your bio page that you live in the Los Angeles area, do you plan on speaking anywhere in the near future?
Keep doing what you do, there are people out there that really need your help,
Peter
Hi Peter,
Thanks for the message, I'm happy you like the show! Yes, the schedule has changed in the last 2 quarters. The Whole Picture airs at 8:00am EDT on Wednesdays and MANY times a week now on HGTV-HD.
Here are the links to the programming schedules:
My speaking engagements vary according to the venue, but I do enjoy inspiring others and sharing information, especially about photography :-)
Keep watching the show, there is more to come.

Hello Erin
I am very excited that the new season has started. I love your show and have learned a great deal from you.
I am a amateur but I have always taken decent photos, but it was missing something, after watching your show my technique has improved greatly, so much so that I have been talked into starting my own photography business (mostly for children). It will be small, and I will go into peoples homes, or location of there choice. I still have tons of questions regarding technique, but I will start with the main question....
What do I do now? I have no idea where to begin with starting a business.....Can you recommend a book, or website, or any advice you can offer would be great!
Also I would be extremely grateful if you would take a look at some of my work, I would love some constructive criticism from you!!! If you are willing and have the time, I will send you a link to my Photoshow Circle site on Comcast.
Thank you for your time.
Wendy
P.S.
Thank you for turning my hobbie into my passion.

Hi Erin:
I watched your show for the first time today (I TiVo'd it - it was on yesterday). I am an amateur photgrapher and I get really great feedback from people regarding my photos, but I have a lot to learn still.
I really enjoyed the show and am looking forward to more, but I do have one question.....in the show I watched your student was working with a digital point and shoot and I have a digital SLR; how do I go about manipulating the exposure of my shots? Do I need to work with the shutter speed and depth-of-field numbers instead?
Thank you so much.

I was thinking about becoming a photographer, but I have so many questions. Do you need to go to school? What camera is the best when doing professional photos? How much should I spend on a camera? What kind of photo software do you use? I'm just really confused please help me out erin!!

Erin, I love your show. What digital photo software do you recommend? I see all the cool stuff you do to the pics that I would like to do.
Jenny
Hi Jenny,
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that you love the show :-)
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on The Whole Picture. It's very easy to use and quite robust! Here's a link to a free trial download:

I have been restoring old family photos for quite some time and have even restored 2 photos that were actually torn completely in 2 parts.
I have used PS 7.01 but recently started using PS Elements 4.0.
I enjoyed your recent show on restorations. Where can I get the inks you mentioned? I use the Epson R1800, with excellent results. But, I'm worried about longevity, since I send the photos to folks who have no resources to replace the ones I give them should they begin to fade.

Erin,
I know I thanked you personally via email for your very informative email. It really was a "god-send" for me. I thought everyone else may need to hear it also. Thanks Erin!
I took your advice and have put things into motion. Your email was not only informative but an inspiration to me. I took some time off from work to get my first site up and running. Strange... I've been designing websites for years for everyone else, but never for myself. I understood from your email that I should have a professional method of showing my work and to provide a contact vehicle for others.
Please take a look if you ever get time from what must be a busy schedule.
Main Site is www.jeffreyjonsmith.com
I also did a shortened Photo Essay on Iceland Geysers @ http://www.jeffreyjonsmith.com/Portfolio/Video/IcelandFlash.htm
Now starts the hard part of research of the sites you provided me. I especially liked the Magnum work. Wow! Their really is some talented people. I hope I can become one of them.
Hey what are your thoughts on watermarks? – I noticed you did not appear to utilize them.
Thanks Again!
Love your show

Erin,
I am looking as you know to take my photography to the next level. I currently use the original 6mp Digital Rebel (I know...) since I have multiple lenses for Canon - I want to stay Canon. I have reviewed my two cameras that I can afford... just wondering which you could recommend. D30 or the newer D5. D5 is 12+mp while the D30 is down around 8.2mp. Your thoughts? I am concerned the D5 is at my spending limit - but it seems to be the better camera while the D30 (successor to the D20) has great history and user base.
I reviewed both at http://www.dpreview.com/ and both have great reviews.
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
My personal preference would be the 5D. Even though the 30D is a great camera for the money (about $1,300), is 8.2 MP, interchanges with your Canon lenses and has an on-camera flash, it has a focal length multiplier of 1.6 which means it doesn't have a full size sensor and your wide angle lenses won't photograph as wide as you'd expect. Ex: if you have a 17-35 wide angle zoom it will actually be more like a 28-55mm zoom when used with this camera. DP Review has a more technical description if you're interested:
focal length multiplier definition
The 5D has more megapixels, 12.7, and most importantly has a full size sensor which has the same field of view as 24x36 mm 'full-size' film frame, so the field of view with your lenses will register true to size. At approx $2,984 for the 5D, there is about a $1,700 difference between the two cameras, so it's something to consider. Good luck! Let me know what you decide.
