Show and Tell
Is there a Whole Picture episode that you’ve seen that really made an impact upon you? Or did you pick up a tidbit from the show that made a difference in your photographs? I have two examples to show you from 2 people who watched my Macro show (DTWP-102) and learned how to make good use of that flower icon on the back of their compact cameras. It looks something like this:

The first one was taken by an 8-year-old boy named Jack, for a photo contest at his school – he won!

He discovered a whole new world out there once he understood how to make his camera focus close-up. He took close-up pictures of everything he could find and happened upon this flower in his backyard. Note that he used the rule of thirds in his composition and placed the flower off-center in the frame. Makes for a more interesting shot, don’t you think? Nice job Jack!
My very gifted hairdresser and artist, Zoren, took this next picture.

He bought his first digital point and shoot camera and wanted a few tips on how to use it. I showed him how to turn on his macro mode (that little flower icon on the back of your camera) and he was off and running. Look what he captured one weekend while sitting out on his patio, now that’s a fantastic shot, wow. I love the colors! Being an artist, he already has some experience with composition; notice how he shot the fly on an angle. This diagonal line in a photograph gives it a dynamic feel. This is the most appealing picture of a fly I’ve ever seen. Great shot Zoren!
If something you learned from one of the shows has helped you create an image you are proud of, send me a link. Maybe it will be featured on one of the blog postings. Until then, keep taking pictures, because the more pictures you take the better you get. Oh, and keep watching The Whole Picture!

What photo software did you use on the most recent episode to edit candid pictures? I was unable to follow using my own software. How do i pull up the toolbar with the lasso tool? Thanks.
Hi Shirley,
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements to edit my images. You can download a free 30 trial by clicking here If you want to purchase the software, it's under $100.
The toolbar in this software program includes the lasso tool.
Happy editing!
Erin
